The Collaborative Curating Project.
August 2015 - June 2016

RAKE invited forty artists to write project proposals on behalf of one of their colleagues. The invited artists were asked to write the application, and also, to some extent, be part of realizing the proposed project. The only thing we emphasized in the invitation, was the importance of collaboration; the collaboration between the proposed artist, the co-curator and RAKE.

At the onset of this project, we had no real sense of where it would take us, and we still don’t. And what does an artist really stand to gain from making a proposal on behalf of someone else? And will such an act be one out of selfless compassion or collegial resentment?

We were hoping that the proposals would answer some of our questions. We’re not sure they did, though. The first one consisted of the following: Our invitation torn in two, taped back together, then return to sender. Now, this might be an indication of unbridled enthusiasm one overflows with when receiving a letter from RAKE. And it might be clever stab at art criticism. Either way, it does say something. It’s a response. It’s a start.

We never heard back from a few of the invited artists, others called and explained that the allotted time wasn’t nearly enough (perhaps they were politely hinting that this project was a bad idea). Many artists, however, did answer in the form of proposals. A few of them proposed to do a project themselves. A fair few proposed projects for close (artist) friends. Others again proposed group shows, which – by sheer luck, we assume – just happened to include their own names. But, as it turned out, most seemed to propose projects for artists they respect and admire – nothing more, nothing less.

And the result of these proposals will be what? We don’t know. The one thing we can say, though, is that The Collaborative Curating Project, will be all about collaboration. How the constallation within collaboration is, could, or should be put together, is an ongoing exploration that for RAKE has no real end, only intermediate stop-overs, formerly known as exhibitions – exhibitions you are welcome to see at RAKE’s space between August 2015 and June 2016.
